Cracking Your Creative DNA
How can we crack the code that informs our creative decisions? We need to discover who we are, what drives our creativity forward and what hinders it. Numerous books endeavour to help us tackle how we come to creative decisions, but it can be broken into a simple equation:
Inspiration + influence + information = your creative DNALike most people, I didn’t consider those three elements for a long time into my career, but it’s a revelation to break them down to see how they shape our thinking, doing and making. It helps to inform and shape the future.
Inspiration - When a moment makes you feel something or a passing idea urges you to take action. While inspiration can be elusive, the key is to let it enter your life, but don’t chase it. An open and curious mind is the one that finds the most fascinating pieces of future work. Colour inspires me no end – its meaning, history, theory, scientific use and reactions to it.
Influence - It’s constantly around us and it shapes our life experiences, from the basic to profound. Every meaningful experience has an effect on us. Take a moment to understand the processes that make up everything around us, and they can give you a direction for your
own work.
Information - Direction based on facts and reasoning. Even just scratching the surface of the vast swathes of information around us can be hugely beneficial. I might be inspired by colour, but I can only make better colour choices based on the science of colour. I love science, biology, psychology, anthropology, behavioural economics and many others – all of those play a key part in my creative decision-making.
Everyone should be encouraged to take time to decipher their own creative process and DNA. Only by looking into every detail can you
use these findings to your favour for better and more meaningful work.
